Turn the wifi off at night when nobody needs it

In most homes, the wifi runs around the clock without anyone giving it a second thought, even during the hours when the whole household is asleep and no device is actually using the connection. It simply becomes part of the background, always on regardless of whether it's needed.

Overnight, when nobody is browsing, streaming or connecting to anything, the router is often still working just as hard as during the busiest part of the day. Turning it off for those hours makes a certain kind of sense, even if the difference isn't something you'd notice straight away.

Make switching off part of the evening

Consider turning the wifi off as part of your evening routine, perhaps at the same time as other things get switched off or tidied away before bed. Many routers have a simple switch or button, which makes this an easy habit to build into an existing routine.

If remembering each night feels like too much effort, some routers allow you to schedule this automatically, so the wifi switches off and back on again at set times without needing to think about it. This removes the habit entirely from your evening routine.

Bear in mind that any device relying on an overnight connection, such as one downloading updates while you sleep, will need to be considered separately. It's worth checking whether anything in the house genuinely needs the connection overnight before switching it off completely.

Turning the wifi off overnight is a small, low-effort habit that fits neatly into most evening routines. It won't transform anything dramatically, but it's a simple way to make sure the connection isn't left running for no reason while everyone is asleep.
